I’m so excited to finally be reviewing
Urban Decay’s Naked Palette. This little beauty has been causing a wee bit of chaos -it’s been in
very high demand for the last month or so. The minute it’s available, it’s quickly sold out again. It’s currently being
sold on Ebay for up to $70-80. In short, people are going gaga for it and for once, I feel the hype is actually well deserved.
The Packaging: I feel that the Naked Palette is packaged very differently from Urban Decay’s other palettes. Urban Decay usually produces palettes with a whimsical, child-like feel (think all 4 Book of Shadows, Vegan Palette, Skull Shadow Box Palette, etc.)
Instead of the usual colorful artwork, the eyeshadows are packaged in a rich brown velour 8 x 2.5 inch palette with the word “NAKED” written in gold across the front. The palette opens to reveal a big mirror, 12 eyeshadows, and a slot for the Double-ended 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil. While I do somewhat like the typical artsy Urban Decay packaging, I do like that this has a more grown up feel.
Downside to the packaging? This is hardly a big deal but when I first got the palette, the gold in the “A” was already chipping away -and I hadn’t even used the darn thing yet! Also, I don’t like that velour can get dusty. Would it be weird to use a lint remover on my palette?!
The Product: The value alone is amazing. One 0.05 oz Urban Decay
eyeshadow single costs $17. This palette contains a whopping twelve 0.05 oz eyeshadows which equals to $204 value (for the eyeshadows alone.) Included with the palette is also a Double-ended 24/7 Pencil (2 x 0.02 oz) and mini Primer Potion (0.13 oz.)
The palette includes 6 permanent shades, 1 repromoted shade, and 5 new shades. The eyeshadows in the palette are also amazing quality-wise. I can honestly say that 11 out of the 12 eyeshadows are smooth, long lasting, and have excellent color payoff. The only dud is Creep -which is a lot sheerer than the rest of the shades. However, it is still buildable and you can get decent color payoff from it.
This is by far my favorite Urban Decay palette. I usually avoid Urban Decay’s palettes because they’re usually too glittery or colorful for me so this nudey palette is perfect.
The Double-ended 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil and mini Primer Potion are also a nice addition to the palette. Urban Decay’s 24/7 pencils aren’t my favorite because they don’t stay on my waterline. However, they do work great on my lash line and stay for hours. (Makeup remover is required for removal.) As for the Primer Potion, I already use it on a regular basis so this is great for travel. If you’ve never tried Primer Potion before, it’s a great eyeshadow primer that prevents your eyeshadow from creasing or fading. I can seriously go to sleep and wake up with my eyeshadow still looking good.
The Color:

Virgin- Shimmery nude beige with a hint of pink (New)

I remember The Streets of San Francisco as a kid – or at least I remember the car chases down and up the hilly streets and marvelling at Karl Maldon’s hilarious root-vegetable snozzle. Otherwise it was dull as ditchwater – to a kid, anyway. The cheesy, self-important title sequence is almost iconic but I’m convinced you can pick up in the narrator’s voice the same ‘Who are these people?’ we’re all thinking. ‘Also starring Firkle J Stinkmeier the Third’ etc. Somehow any intent to build expectation is totally deflated by the pomposity of it all. But then along came Frank Drebin…

The portentious opening titles of Streets of San Francisco were ripe for parody. Police Squad’s take on them set the tone for this brilliant series – so brilliant it was taken off after six episodes. Thank goodness TV has been sorted out in the USA and the execs have been pensioned off, allowing for good stuff to be commissioned. AS few of them were probably forced to commit hare kire after The Naked Gun raked in billions of dollars.

I woke up early. This was no problem this morning, in Germany it’s 5 hours later. I got a coffee from downstairs and soon I stepped on my mat.
To discover new countries often means to step out of the comfort zone. We heard horror stories before our trip. The worst was from the banker who has been in Brasil. She told me that a man was forced with a knife to put off his jeans and his shoes, because they were precious brands. He had to walk back to the hotel from Copacapana beach, dressed only with his underwear. I saw myself already walking home with my underwear from one of the beaches. When they (they?) see my underwear they want those, too, I thought. Horror stories! Crimes happen everywhere in the world. It is important not to be naiv, for sure. One has to see oneself!

Sunday was all about Urban Decay and Wet ‘n’ Wild!
I’m so happy to say that I’ve finally got my hands on the
Urban Decay NAKED Palette. I knew my boyfriend has gotten it for me, but I didn’t know when he was going to actually
give me the palette. I was sitting down and asked him to get me the “brown” blanket since it was freezing (it’s pretty hot here but I get so cold easily!) Anyways, he said, “Ok” and went into the closet to get it. Instead, he came out with the Naked Palette! He placed it in my hands and all I could do was stare at it. I know it seems insane to be so happy about plain ol’ makeup but I seriously couldn’t speak! I was
so ecstatic.
Here’s a peak at the colors. I’m sure you’ve already seen it from
YouTube and so many other blogs.
Later on at night, he took me to Rite Aid because I’d been wanting to get some Wet ‘n’ Wild stuff. This week, they have a BOGO (buy 1 get 1 free) sale going on so it was
perfect. I also had a $5 off $10 Wet ‘n’ Wild coupon (I got it from October’s issue of
All You magazine) and another Rite Aid $1 off $10 cosmetics purchase coupon.
With all the coupons, I got 6 products for just $5.97 (before tax.) It really pays off to add up those coupons. Without coupons, the subtotal would’ve been $22.94 (before tax.)
P.S. I’m on a trial subscription of All You. Most magazines will send you 1 or 2 “trial issues” and if you don’t like it, you just cancel. The magazine’s pretty cool -the best part is the coupons on practically every other page, but I already get so many other magazine subscriptions plus the daily paper so I’m not sure if I want to subscribe yet.
And last but not least, I got an email from Sephora saying that Urban Decay’s popular Primer Potion was now available (for a limited time) in the professional size. I really have no idea why they don’t make this permanent -I don’t think
anyone likes the genie bottle packaging. For $29, it seems a little steep but you do get a lot of product (0.85 oz.) I want to buy it -but I already have enough Primer Potion to last me well over a year (plus I often switch it out with the
Too Faced Shadow Insurance.) Hopefully they’ll still have this later on at
UrbanDecay.com.

A bit of organisation makes the start in a new country perfect. We were picked up by a very friendly taxi driver who held up a sign with E’s name. He even spoke a good English and pointed at the sightseeings of his city while he drove us to the hotel.
And here I am now, a bit hungry and tired. I am ready for a Brazilian adventure, but no more today. Tomorrow.

I’ve mentioned several times before that I absolutely adoreNARS lip glosses. I know some people hate them, but for those like me who love them, I’d highly recommend the
NARS 3-Piece Duo Lip Gloss Set.
The Packaging: The set is packaged in a nice little box and wrapped with a ribbon -perfect and ready for gift giving. The tubes are like the “regular” NARS lip glosses tubes -except double sided. The rubbery, matte black ”caps” are in the middle and have a doe foot applicator on each side (1 for each gloss.) I think the tubes are actually really convenient -they allow you to carry more gloss shades without the extra weight.
Ingredients
The Product: This is a great value. You get 0.96 oz for just $49.00! I think NARS may have discontinued all their duo lip glosses (they only have the
lip gloss/lip stain duos on the site) but they used to be (I think) $28.00. The “regular” glosses are 0.28 oz for $24.00 each. So no matter what, you’re getting a really good deal.
NARS lip glosses tend to have a thinner texture. I’ve heard a lot of people describe NARS glosses as being sticky -but to me, they’re more tacky. The tackiness helps the gloss stick to the lips but I don’t find them to be sticky (like MAC glosses.) The gloss is also smooth and moisturizing and keeps my lips soft for hours (including the hours after the gloss has faded.) It lasts for about 4 hours on bare lips.
The only downside is the smell and taste -like waxy crayons. But once it’s applied, it quickly goes away so it’s really not too bad.
Above (from top): Giza, Chihuahua, Harlow

The Color: These all can be sheered out and layered for a more pigmented effect.
Rose Birman/Chihuahua Duo
1. Rose Birman- Sheer deep red with a touch of brown.
2. Chihuahua- Light pinkish guava.
Sweet Dreams/Harlow Duo
3. Sweet Dreams- Sheer light pink with lots of pink and golden shimmer.
4. Harlow- Light frosty mauve with silver shimmer.
Boogie Nights/Giza Duo
5. Boogie Nights- Deep but bright metallic-y rasberry fuchsia with fuchsia shimmer.
6. Giza- Light milky peach with a touch of pink.

We celebrated my brother’s birthday about a month ago and I totally forgot that I wanted to share some of the pictures with you. It was a LEGO themed party and we went all out. There were LEGO themed snacks, games, party favors, and more and pretty much everything was hand-made because no stores had LEGO party supplies. It was definitely the hardest we ever worked on for one of the kids’ parties and the most expensive. Why couldn’t he just want a party at Chuck E. Cheese like a normal kid??
LEGO Sugar Cookies- These took the longest to make.. about 15 hours. I had to cut the dough by hand (no cookie cutters) using a ruler and knife, bake the cookies, ice them, and put the candy dots on top.
LEGO Rice Krispies Treats
LEGO Men Gummies (like gummy bears)
I love all the colors!
Chocolate LEGO bricks
This was what the “place setting” looked like. Each kid had a “LEGO Man” with his name on it on top of a plain LEGO mat where they got to build whatever they wanted.
LEGO party favor bags!
Guess how many LEGOs are in the jar?
This was one of the games. The kids were put into teams and had to memorize everything on the board. The team who memorized the most items won!
LEGO & Space themed birthday cake
Happy Birthday!

Noticing volume 16 of Pearson’s Magazine was being offered on eBay, I immediately put a bid in for it and then moved on to volume 17, which had been sitting there for a while on a Buy-it-Now-or-Best-Offer job, so asked for a bit off it and got that, too. There were still a few days to go on 16 (I won it last night for £20), so 17 turned up first. After tearing the packaging apart in a frenzy – as I always do when one of these bound volumes arrives in the post – I opened it randomly, and what do I see? This! A bloke being chased by a horde of gigantic rats! Oh god, I love this stuff. Turned out to be an instalment of Food of the Gods by H G Wells. The serialisation begins in vol 16, and ends in 17, so I shall look forward to reading it in its original parts (I seem to remember starting it as a kid of about 12 but giving up on it).

The last of the NARS palettes to review is the
Bridal Palette. After hearing so many rave reviews, I was really excited for this -but it didn’t live up to my expectations.
The Packaging: The products are packaged in traditional NARS packaging -a matte black, rubbery palette. I like the big mirror that’s included -perfect for travel. However, I mentioned in the review for the Everlasting Love palette that I hate when powder and cream products are packaged together. All the powder from the eyeshadows and blushes get mixed into the lipsticks and lip lacquer -sort of “contaminating” them.
The Product:
1. Eyeshadows- The eyeshadows were pigmented, smooth, and long lasting. Of the 4, I felt that Nepal and Ondine had excellent color payoff. Night Fever and Edie only had average/good payoff. Night Fever is a little hard to work with. I’ve read from several reviews that it’s just plain black when applied but you really have to layer it on to see the violet flecks. Also, I found it difficult to blend.
2. Blushes- Like the eyeshadows, both blushes were smooth, pigmented, and long wearing. Orgasm had better color payoff of the 2 but Albatross still had good payoff. Helpful Hint: With Albatross, use a light hand if you’re tanner/darker. It appears white on my skin when I use too much.
3. Lip Products- Like the Everlasting Love palette, I felt that the lipsticks and lip lacquer were all on the sheer side. Each color only gave me a slight “tint” of color -not what I wanted. (Baby Doll Lip Lacquer doesn’t show up on my lips at all!) I’m positive that this has to do with the fact that these are packaged in pan/palette form because I’ve swatched the lipsticks (in regular stick form) and they’re all much more pigmented.
Other then that, the lipsticks and lacquers were comfortable to wear and were semi-moisturizing. The lipsticks, however, dry out my lips over time.
Above: NARS Bridal Palette
The Color:
Eyeshadows
1. Nepal- Muted, almost tanned, rose with pearly shimmer.
2. Ondine- Muted plum with a hint of taupe and gold shimmer.
3. Edie- Sheer cream with fine shimmer.
4. Night Fever- Smokey black-violet (more black than violet) with violet flecks of glitter. (This definitely could’ve been more pigmented and intense.)
Blushes
1. Orgasm Blush- Medium peachy pink with a coral edge and golden shimmer.
2. Albatross Highlighter- Cream with golden shimmer. This gives a warm, luminous glow and has a really nice sheen to it.
Lip Products
1.
Mitzi Lipstick- Sheer, rosey strawberry (think
real red strawberries) pink with shimmer. (This is nearly the same color as my lips and only darkens them a bit.) If this actually came out like the swatch displayed on the
NARS and
Sephora sites, I’d be in love.
2. Baby Doll Lip Lacquer- Light, shimmery pink with a slight hint of peach. (Doesn’t show up on my lips.)
3. Sexual Healing Lipstick- Metallic bronzed rose with a slight peach tint and silver shimmer.
4. Roman Holiday Lipstick- Sheer pastel pink. On the lips, the true color doesn’t show much and gives a pinkish tint.
Swatches..
Above NARS Bridal Palette (from left): Nepal, Ondine, Edie, Night Fever, Orgasm Blush, Albatross Blush
Above NARS Bridal Palette (from left): Mitzi lipstick, Baby Doll Lip Lacquer, Sexual Healing lipstick, Roman Holiday lipstick
Overall: Along with the Everlasting Love and
Wild At Heart Palettes, I’ve since sold this palette. I feel like the palette is pretty good overall -if you like all the shades. I really wish the lipsticks and lacquer were more pigmented but the eyeshadows and blushes were overall good/very good.
On the upside, this is a palette that will work with most skin tones as it’s very subtle and natural. The palette is true to its name and would work very well for bridal looks (although I’d prefer other products for my own bridal look myself.)

To make up for my posting lapse here are a couple of colourful ads from 1928 editions of the Strand Magazine. Through the summer months in the Twenties Bird’s seemed to always take the back page spot, with Bovril taking it over in the autumn and winter (but not necessarily the prime Christmas position, which as likely as not would be had by the now-defunct Super-Kreem Toffees). These two appeared in September and November. What amuses me about the Bird’s advert is that I’m willing to bet the ‘Cheerio! Jolly old etc’ tagline was just as naff to the youngsters it was aimed at as any attempted youth-speak by corporate advertisers is today. ‘Oh crikey, mummy, simply nobody says “Cheerio” these days, that’s so 1926,’ you can almsot hear the young deb say. ‘Dude, I mean, totally.’ Well, maybe not that.

OK, this is shameful, isn’t it? I seem to be having a bit of a wank holiday weekend, doing sod all so have shamelessly combined Saturday Matinee with Spooky Sunday with a couple of daft B-movie ghosts. From now on if I miss a day, I’ll just miss a day and stop maing lame apologies for it. Anyway, here is Terror in the Haunted House (1961) also known – I learn from IMDB – as My World Dies Screaming. Oh and look, it’s made in ‘Psycho-Rama’ (what a great name for a band!), which apparently meant they shoved in odd frames of scary imagery, like a bloke with a rat in his mouth, and messages like ‘Scream Now!’. All very William Castle, but not.
Then we have Lucky Ghost (1942), later renamed Lady Luck and featuring the extraordinary Mantan Moreland and an ‘all-colored cast’. I’d like to see more of Morland. I saw him in another cheap horror-comedy flick from the same period called I think King of the Zombies; he gets third billing, effortlessly steals every scene he’s in and takes the piss out of the white ‘stars’ in a way I wouldn’t have thought possible in the 40s. He was a bit of a geezer, I thought, and I’d like to learn more about him. I must see if there’s a biography.

14 ” ‘The days are coming,’ declares the LORD, ‘when I will fulfill the gracious promise I made to the house of Israel and to the house of Judah.
15 ” ‘In those days and at that time
I will make a righteous Branch sprout from David’s line; he will do what is just and right in the land.
16 In those days Judah will be saved
and Jerusalem will live in safety.
This is the name by which it will be called:
The LORD Our Righteousness.’
17 For this is what the LORD says: ‘David will never fail to have a man to sit on the throne of the house of Israel,
18 nor will the priests, who are Levites, ever fail to have a man to stand before me continually to offer burnt offerings, to burn grain offerings and to present sacrifices.’ ”
19 The word of the LORD came to Jeremiah:
20 “This is what the LORD says: ‘If you can break my covenant with the day and my covenant with the night, so that day and night no longer come at their appointed time,
21 then my covenant with David my servant—and my covenant with the Levites who are priests ministering before me—can be broken and David will no longer have a descendant to reign on his throne.
22 I will make the descendants of David my servant and the Levites who minister before me as countless as the stars of the sky and as measureless as the sand on the seashore.’ ”
23 The word of the LORD came to Jeremiah:
24 “Have you not noticed that these people are saying, ‘The LORD has rejected the two kingdoms he chose’? So they despise my people and no longer regard them as a nation.
25 This is what the LORD says: ‘If I have not established my covenant with day and night and the fixed laws of heaven and earth,
26 then I will reject the descendants of Jacob and David my servant and will not choose one of his sons to rule over the descendants of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. For I will restore their fortunes and have compassion on them.’ “

For Denise: Vrksasana is not part of the Asthanga series as far as I’ve seen it. Vrksasana or tree pose was one of my first asana that I was introduced decades ago, it’s a classic. Like in all balancing asanas, the standing leg is engaged. The foot is firm on the floor. The hips are erected. Tension is in the body that lasts from the little toe to the finger (but the body is not cramped). Bandhas help to balance as usual and an even breathing.
I think tree pose is a nice pose for children. (Caution: the foot of the bent leg does not press against the knee. It’s either above the knee or below.)
The Sun
Have you ever seen
anything
in your life
more wonderful
than the way the sun,
every evening,
relaxed and easy,
floats towards the horizon
and into the clouds or the hills,
or the rumpled sea,
and is gone–
and how it slides again
out of the blackness,
every morning,
on the other side of the world,
like a red flower
streaming upward on its heavenly oils,
say, on a morning in early summer,
at its perfect imperial distance–
and have you ever felt for anything
such wild love–
do you think there is anywhere, in any language,
a word billowing enough
for the pleasure
that fills you,
as the sun
reaches out,
as it warms you
as you stand there,
empty-handed–
or have you too
turned from this world–
or have you too
gone crazy
for power,
for things?

(2 more blushes have fallen out of their pans since I received this one.)
The Packaging: The little “book” the blushes are stored in looks extremely convenient and great for travel -but it’s not. The blushes aren’t securely packed into their pans -causing the blushes to fall out and become crushed. At first, I thought it was because the palette wasn’t “handled with care” while in transit but this happened with all at least one of the blushes in all 3 “Belle” palettes I own.
Here’s what the first palette looked like. I was lucky that the seller was so nice and was sent another.
I tried my best to salvage all the blushes. They got mixed up a bit because they were all crushed but I did my best.
Product Description & Ingredients
The Product: I think Beauty Ticket may have raised the price (I could’ve sworn it was just $6.99 a month ago) but either way -even if you pay the full $28.00 price, it’s an amazing value. With this palette, you get 2 highlighters and 6 blushes.
I can see myself using all the shades in the palette. The highlighters are a bit pale with a light hand, they do work for me. The blushes and highlighters all have great color payoff (although 7 & 8 blend in with my skin tone) and last for about 3-4 hours on bare skin.
Now what I don’t like is the way this stuff smells -like 90′s drugstore makeup (very perfume-y.) Also, the blushes and highlighters are on the powdery side and and are chalky -some more than others. However, especially for the price, I can learn to manage.
The Color: (Colors are listed by number as they have no names. See above photos. All shades have shimmer.)

Overall: I don’t regret buying the palette (since it was so cheap) but I definitely wouldn’t purchase anymore of Pop Beauty’s “Belle” palettes. The blushes/highlighters are quite nice but not worth the trouble. The packaging is horrible and the stuff smells like old lady makeup.

New Grading System.. I’m trying a new grading system so that it makes more sense. My previous grading system gave each category a grade out of “10″ -but the grade didn’t total up to the “right letter grade” as I weighed more of the grade on the product than the value and packaging. So, I’ve changed the maximum scores for each the product, packaging, and value so that it’s clearer to understand -this way the actual “overall grade” will make more sense mathematically. Hope this makes sense! And if you’re curious about how the previous review grades worked, my overall “thoughts” are based mainly on the product and overall grades.

Thrifted khaki shirt – Asos white tee – H&M vest – Silence + noise skirt – Asos chain wedge boots – ebayed glasses
I wore this out to dinner last night with family,- these boots were on Asos ages ago, and I fell in love with them (well, I was in love with the Givenchy originals but that’s one dream too far). Unfortunately I was stone broke at the time, and missed out; luckily I spotted them on ebay last week for a very reasonable price and snapped them up. They will be worn to death, I am sure.
I practiced with the CD by Sharath on Friday. It is my led class so to say.
The CD gives me the focus of the day:
1. It’s the correct vinyasa count. There is no time for extra breaths, also not between the asanas.

This week has been extraordinarily busy for me for some odd reason… so this weekend I am taking it EASY. I’m actually looking forward to sleeping until noon this Saturday and to some much cuddle time with the hubby. I hope that you all do the same! I want to say thanks for the NYC suggestions – more posts about the trip coming soon!

And while I’m in a seasidey, folksy mood, here is yet more XTC (and there’ll be more!) with a sea shanty. Big kudos to the guy who uploaded this on YouTube. It was a total flop (didn’t exactly fit in with the music scene in 1984!) and I never saw the vid – and this seems to be the only copy, fuzzy though it be. According to the comments, it may never have been shown on telly.

I should have added that I’ve just finished uploading my photos from Devon (and from the East of England) onto Flickr (http://www.flickr.com/photos/richardholland/). James took loads, too, including this one of me, pissed on the balcony outside my room. The hotel in Clovelly is separated into two buildings either side of the narrow cobbled street and by chance our rooms faced each other. Needless to say the hurling of drunken insults immediately ensued when, retiring on our first night, we discovered this.

Isn’t this great? I spotted it while wandering round the small north Devon town of Hartland while I was in the area for Weird Weekend earlier this month. It’s a ceramic Tardis – a small post-box maybe (perhaps it’s bigger on the inside than on the outside)? Anyway, it looked cool bertween these two Tardis-coloured doors.

Urdhva kukkutasana – a view in the future:
The balancing poses become more and more demanding with each series. I had to try urdhva kukkutasana, a pose from the third series. Third series will happen in this life time, perhaps not each and every asana, but man of them. Not in the next year, but it can be that in the middle of 2012 the first asana of third series will fly to me. Hahahahaha.
The video:
I realized that it helps to balance when I press the hands in the floor. The fingers have enormous power to balance. It is also helpful to press the elbows towards each other. When the technique is correct, less strength is needed usually, but a bit of strength is needed in the arms for this pose. Bandhas are very helpful to balance and to get up again.
Back to this Friday:
I will do primary with the CD by Sharath, the entire thing. It builds strength. I need strength.

A mantra is a thought or intention expressed as a sound. These sounds include syllables, words, or phrases, which may or may not have their own translatable meanings. ”OM” is the most popular mantra.

I happen to think that loving ourselves is the very first principle for anything in life. Without self love it is difficult to love others, or to give. Although it sounds selfish and counterintuitive self love is the only way in which we can learn how to love another one. Seeing what is good in us is the fundamental principle behind seeing what is good in everyone, in recognizing our own divinity, and hence others’ divinities.

These four poses provide an accurate emotional measurement of my whole life. They get into the psoas and outer hips (all of the same magical little muscles and fascia that half-lotus poses do), and that’s where I keep all of my stressy business. If I’m practicing regularly and consonantly (there are days when Intermediate, for example, simply isn’t consonant with my daily life), then these complicated fascial knots tend to let the energy move through more freely. If I’m either not practicing a lot and/or tied up with frustration about my existence (I’m talking to YOU, Patrick meets seventh series), these same fascial knots load up with dark stressy poison that is painful to acquire and hold and MANY TIMES more painful to then release in Primary during the Mari quartet.

Again, I apologize for lack of more and better photos and swatches. I took all these photos last year before I knew how to fully work my camera. However, the photos are relatively accurate color-wise (for product and swatch photos) -they’re just not like my usual photos.
The Packaging: The eyeshadows, blushes, and lip products are all packaged in one, sleek matte black palette. The palette is made of the same “rubbery” material that all other NARS products are packaged with. I like that the palette contains a big mirror -perfect for travel and on-the-go makeup touch-ups.
But my love stops there. I cannot stand when a palette contains both powder (eyeshadows, blush) and cream (The Multiple, lipsticks, lip lacquer) products in the same tier/compartment. Because of this, the powder from the eyeshadows/blushes tend to get mixed in with the cream products -in this case, the lip products and the Multiple.
The Product:
1.
Eyeshadows- The eyeshadows were all smooth, long wearing, and had good color payoff. Both Underworld I and Underworld II (both from Underworld duo) had excellent payoff. They actually had better payoff than the Underworld Duo I purchased after buying this palette (
here’s the review for that.) Night Breed had
very good color payoff and Edie had good payoff. Overall, all the eyeshadows worked very well and measured up to “NARS standards.”
2.
Blushes- The Orgasm blush worked great. It was smooth, longwearing, and pigmented -qualities I expect from all NARS blushes. The South Beach Multiple however did not live up to my expectations. I’ve found that cream products in palette form
never live up to their “stick” form counterparts. South Beach was sheer -I had to really layer it on to get any color at all. It was average in lasting ability but was at least comfortable to wear. Overall, I didn’t like it. I’ve swatched South Beach in it’s regular
“stick form” and it’s so much more pigmented.
3. Lip Products- In short, I couldn’t stand any of the lip products. I was thrilled to try the palette because I love nude lippies -but none of the lipsticks or the lip lacquer showed up on my lips! Again, because they are in palette/pan form, the cream products tend to me a lot less pigmented. No matter what I did, I got absolutely no color so I can’t even comment on how long each shade lasted because it never showed up in from the start. Other than that, they were all on the glossy side and were semi-moisturizing. The lipsticks did seem to dry out my lips in the long run though (my lips got dry after wearing them.)

The Color:
Eyeshadows
1. Edie- Sheer cream with fine shimmer.
2. Underworld I- Shimmery silver with slight blue tint.
3. Underworld II- Darker, silvery, slate blue with shimmer.
4. Night Breed- Deep black with silver glitter.
Blushes
1. Orgasm Blush- Medium peachy pink with a coral edge and golden shimmer.
2. South Beach The Multiple- Shimmery bronzed apricot.
Lip Products
1. Belle De Jour Lipstick- Sheer beige nude
2. Chelsea Girls Lip Lacquer- Sheer, creamy, medium pinkish nude.
3. Promiscuous Lipstick- Sheer, warm, golden-honey beige nude with shimmer.
4. Dolce Vita Lipstick- Sheer, natural, dusty rose.
Swatches..

Overall: I ended up selling this palette. Although the eyeshadows and Orgasm blush are great quality-wise, the South Beach The Multiple, Lip Lacquer, and lipsticks don’t measure up to the high quality I so often associate with NARS products. I feel like half of the palette is pretty much unusable because all the lip products are too sheer -and my lips aren’t even that pigmented. I love the idea of the palette, bold eyes and nude lips, but I don’t feel that NARS executed the idea as well as they could’ve.

Thinking and balancing poses: Sometimes when I practice utthita parsvasahita in a led class I really stand stable, I am like a statue of porcelaine. Then a thought comes up: Oh, today it is good. ………Then it WAS good, because a thougth, even a positive one usually makes me wobbling.
Best is to observe the breath and to engage the muscles including the bandhas. To observe the breath means not thinking I observe the breath. Simply listening to it, is it. The eyes are calm, they do not move or look around. An imagined point to look at helps to keep them calm. When applying these techniques there is a chance that a pose can become stable.

I bought that book of Satyrical Drawings of Martin van Maele (see a previous Weird Wednesday) but alas they turned out to be all his erotic drawings; the ‘satyrical’ presumably being there in an attempt to give the publication some legitimacy. But there are a dozen illustrations maybe that aren’t in Taschen’s Erotica Universalis, including this one which I’ve chosen partly because it is pretty weird and also because I can just about get away with it on this blog (the one of the suicide hanging himself by his nob would have been too strong ‘meat’, I feel!).

I heard rather late about it. To come up from halasana to ubbaya padangusthasana shall happen with straight legs. This makes this sitting asana to a balancing pose.
The usual suspicions help:
1. Correct breathing: Come up with inhaling
2. Engage the bandhas.
3. Dristhi: look upwards to the toes and stretch the body.
4. What helps me is that I stretch the feet upwards. I can balance out the pose with these little movements of my feet.
A trick: I have learned this by M, my yoga teacher here. When you don’t manage it to come up with straight legs, put a very soft blanket on your mat and try it on this blanket. Then the rolling becomes slow motion. It’s easier to learn the timing (matching the breath with the movement) when coming up slower.

I read another chapter in the book about guruji. This time it was Brad Ramsey who told me his story. I can only touch some points.
Eat. Pray. Love . . . Three individually simple and unanimously positive words that, when combined, as in the title of the
book by Elizabeth Gilbert and
newly released film starring Julia Roberts, conjure up mixed feelings within the yoga community. It’s hard to pinpoint the precise root of these feelings, especially when the book was, by most accounts, well-written and well-received. I suspect our reservations stem from the ongoing dialogue about how yoga’s mushrooming popularity and commercialization makes us feel—a discussion we have on this site often.
“I’m curious because it’s Julia Roberts,†says a friend several weeks before the movie debuts. “If it were, say, Jennifer Aniston, I would NOT see Eat, Pray, Love. And I like Jennifer Aniston, but I would already know what kind of movie I was getting, and—no, thank you.â€
With this statement, my friend (who happens to be from India, where a portion of the book and film take place) summarizes the precarious task of taking a heartfelt and hilarious spiritual memoir and turning it into
Sex and the City for the yoga set. The girls-night premier parties, product tie-ins (Fresh cosmetics released a line of fragrances in conjunction with the movie; they include—wait for it—Eat, Pray, and Love), and oodles of coverage in the media all suggested that the film adaptation might be nothing more than a spiritually bereft and trite “chick flick.â€
Thankfully, it wasn’t Jennifer Aniston, a lovely and infinitely likable comedic actress but one lacking the depth of Julia Roberts, and it wasn’t Sex and the City for the yoga set. It just wasn’t that great of a movie.
It was entertaining, and I enjoyed it, but it didn’t rock my om gal world. I liked it most after the first 1/3 of the film, which was slow and clumsy. I recall Elizabeth Gilbert’s heartbreak in the beginning of the book as being more potent, with the subsequent pilgrimage to Italy, India, and Bali legitimized by the level of that heartbreak and her determination to heal. Moreover, Gilbert’s craft (writing) was more prevalent in the book, and it was evident she intended to write about her travels from the start. Without this underlying objective, the movie bordered on self-indulgent at times. How many newly divorced people can afford to heal their broken hearts by vacating all responsibilities for a year and taking a soul-searching sabbatical around the globe? When a laptop finally made an appearance more than an hour into the film, I breathed a sigh of relief. Then again, I’m a writer, so it’s possible this didn’t bother anyone else . . .
The absence of yoga, in asana form, bothered some. Alas, not me. I rejoiced in seeing nary a poorly aligned yoga pose or Hollywood orchestrated yoga class in the film. Even if executed well, a yoga practice in
Eat, Pray, Love might be too obvious or, worse, kitschy. And it doesn’t hurt to show a Western audience that there’s more to spirituality in India (and yoga as a whole) than the tricky yoga poses featured in chick flicks such as: The Next Best Thing (Madonna), What Women Want, Spanglish (Tea Leoni), Failure to Launch . . . Do I need to keep going?
For some, the film not only didn’t rock their worlds; it pissed them off thoroughly. Ask our pal
David Romanelli about
the response he got from heterosexual male friends when he suggested they see the film together and get some “fro-yo†afterward. Peruse some of the critiques, comments, and blogs online, and you’ll find that people describe
Eat, Pray, Love as everything from “fickle,” to “insufferable,” to “racist.”
I disagree with the harshness of these reviews; I liked the movie and found it charming, albeit a tad bland and unfulfilling (not the food, though; the food in Italy looked exquisite). I walked away feeling entertained, which is I think the point of going to the movies, no? It’s a visually alluring story of heartbreak, friendship, forgiveness, and love, peppered with some male eye candy (hello, James Franco) and infused with a few spiritual nuggets (though not as compelling or complex as the book).
Wait a second . . . maybe it is a chick flick? Maybe I’m OK with that.

The cover of the new issue of Pop Magazine has been revealed- and I am already so excited to get my hands on it. This may or may not be a surprise, but I was a huge fan of Britney Spears in my childhood years. And I still listen to her music sometimes- there are so many classics! Anyway, she has been transformed (or ressurected?) by Takashi Murakami into a Lolita style Pop princess, surrounded by Japanese script, cute characters, strawberries and bridal veils. It’s been in the back of my mind for a while that someone would surely grant Britters a cover soon- and this is exactly the sort of thing I was hoping for. A twist on her virginal, cutesy image in the early years, I think it is clever and very eye-catching.

In my last “haul” post, I talked about how I got the striped sweater but really wanted the solid oatmeal version instead. Well I took your advice and exchanged it. I thought I was going to have to return, buy it online, and wait for it to be delivered -sort of a hassle, so I really didn’t want to do it. I decided to just try my luck and go to another Wet Seal store and luckily, I found it!! I was so happy! Here it is..
I also picked up a taupey-purpley beret for the GAP Outlet that I really like.
Also, earlier that day, we went to Great America again and won 3 basketballs. =)
That’s pretty much it for the tiny little haul. I just wanted to show you the sweater I got since I like this one way more than the striped one I got last week.

The standing asanas are balancing asanas.
The most challenging ones for me are
utthita hasta padangusthasana (pic 1), utthita parsvasahita (pic 2) and utthita eka padasana (both hands an the hips, one leg is stretched forward).
Let’s get grounded, let’s press the feet in the floor, let’s engage our muscles (leg muscles, bandhas).
Balancing poses are easier when I have strength. They are easier when I apply the correct technique, then I need less strength.
Picture 1: It is possible to bring up the leg stretched. I bend it first, grap the outer side (it’s classic to hold the toe) and then I stretch it. When I bend it first I can bring the leg a bit higher. In India they consisted that the nose touched the leg. That’s why I always do it that way.
I hold the outer side of the foot at home because
- this gives me more stability
- it is as if it’s easier for me to keep the hips parallel
- before the last post I can grap the feet with both hands and can pull it to my body. Important! I do not have to change how I hold my foot.
(In classses I grap the toe.)
Picture 2: With an even inhaling the upper body comes up and with the next exhaling the leg goes to the one side, the head turns to the other side. Especially in this pose dristi (the side) helps to balance. Don’t move the eyes. Look at one point. Ignore everything else, especially the other yogis and yoginis who are wobbling and falling out of this pose. Be a lonesome wolf, only you and your asana counts, nothing else. The breath is deep. I imagine that the breath goes up to the sky when I inhale and it goes down to the floor, through my body that is like a pipeline made of metal. The breath holds me. The bandhas give me stability, the usual suspicious.
Picture3: After 5 breaths I bring the leg back to the middle, each movement brings the danger to wobble. Move slow, breath remains evenly Then I grasp my feet with both hands and I pull it to my upper body (standing split) with a long inhaling.
Utthita eka padasana: Last but not least both hands go to the hips, one leg is stretched forward. This is now a challenge to hold the leg. Don’t give up, become stubborn, dedicate it , curse, what ever you might think, but hold, hold it, hold this asana. To engage the muscles is it and they start burning. This shapes the body. This is for the beauty I think, and hold the pose for another deep breath.
Next side, left leg.
These 3 asanas are the reasons why I like to practice with the CD by Sharath when I practice the standing asanas. I hold the asanas longer than when I practice on my own.
More than in other asanas, the dristi helps to balance and visualisation. Imagine your body as a statue. I imagine myself as a pipeline for the breath.
In small rooms it is easier for me to be stable. It is as if the walls hold me. I see how important thoughts and psychological factors are.
I am curious: What makes your asanas stable?
Stay tuned: Tomorrow comes a video about a sitting balancing asana? What? Sitting and balancing?
See you tomorrow!

Price: $24.00 (0.17 oz)
Product: 8.5/10
Packaging: 7/10
Value: 8.5/10
Overall Grade: B
While on my trip, I stopped by the Sephora in Downtown Disney. I didn’t want to get anything because I wasn’t really impressed by the customer service but ended up giving in and getting the LORAC Baked Matte Satin Blush in Exposed.
The Packaging: I’m not too fond of the packaging. The blush is packaged in a shiny onyx pan with a clear, plastic lid -which reminds me more of typical “drugstore packaging” than something from a “high-end” brand like LORAC. For $24, I also would’ve expected a mirror. I feel like the compact could easily break if I wasn’t careful.
Product Ingredients
Product Description & Directions
The Product: I have no idea why this is labeled as a matte blush when it obviously has lots of shimmer and sheen. The blush gives the most beautiful, luminous glow and isn’t too flashy or in-your-face as the shimmer is very fine. I also love that the blush feels light on my skin and doesn’t itch or feel heavy like other face products tend to on my sensitive skin.
The downside is that the blush doesn’t last very long -about 3 hours at most (on bare skin.) However, I’m willing to put that aside since this is the most gorgeous blush I’ve seen in a long time.

LORAC Baked Matte Satin Blush in Exposed
The Color: Bright, medium, peachy pink with a touch of coral and lots of fine shimmer. This could be overly shimmery for some -you can only see all the shimmer when you look closely. From a distance, it looks like more of a luminous glow.
Swatches.. (The blush is way prettier in person. The swatch photos honestly don’t do it justice. In person, it’s much brighter and more pigmented.)
Above (with flash) from left: Velvet Rope, Exposed, Flaunt, Hollywood, Plush (The swatches in this photo most resemble the actual colors.)
Above (no flash) from left: Velvet Rope, Exposed, Flaunt, Hollywood, Plush
Above (no flash): Exposed
Overall: I really love everything about this blush except for the fact that it doesn’t last too long. I’m very disappointed with the lasting ability of the blush as I expected better quality from LORAC. However, I’d still recommend it because it’s so beautiful -perfect for the summertime. Once Fall kicks in, I’d love to get my hands on Velvet Rope since it’s a little deeper in color.

Maybe using all that anger to psyche myself out is paying off, I see now that anger can be “channeled properly”.
I feel the drop backs are getting better, and even though I still feel that if I was to drop back I would go head first, hence making it not so pleasant, I have to say I am grateful to all of you who have been giving me specific tips. I am listening, and they help!

A yogini friend asked me:
Hi Ursula,
can you jump back from Bakasana to Chaturanga? If yes, you could do me a really great favor if you post a video. I’ve been practising this since I don’t know when and it simply does not happen. In videos it always looks so easy but everytime I try my legs just won’t lift. Any video showing this I watch one hundred times hoping to discover the secret. Since it hasn’t happened yet, it would be great to have another one!

This week I want to write about balancing.
Bakasana was my first pose that I experienced as a balancing pose. The challenges grow with the practice:
1. First it is nice to be in that pose with almost stretched arms.
2. The next step is to jump back into chaturanga dandasana.
3. In the second series bakasana B is learned. That means that one jumps into that pose from downward facing dog. I am working on this.
4. And finally it is possible (I have seen this) to go from bakasana to handstand.
Recently I’ve read a few posts from various bloggers (the ones who spring to mind are Selina and Vanessa, but there have been others), mentioning a certain level of pressure they feel as bloggers to always be dressed in eye-catching, fashion forward clothes and looking immaculate. At first I was in disbelief, as all these ladies are beautiful and wear wonderful things. But is this even relevant? They’ve both written that sometimes they’ll meet followers of their blog who may expect them to wear the sort of stuff worthy of outfit posts every day and perhaps are disappointed to find that they don’t. This may well be just in their heads- as I doubt anyone could be so rude as to say such things- but it has alerted me to a certain “blogger neurosis” that I guess was inevitable. Anything involving putting images of yourself on the internet is going to elicit a level of self-consciousness beyond the norm,- and related pressures include things like re-wearing pieces to death, or worrying about wearing stuff not on trend or not from the right stores or whatever. Putting yourself out there so that people you have not or may never meet is brave, but not without its concerns.

I haven’t blogged for a few days because I’ve been away in Newcastle since Thursday visiting a friend, and when I got back last night I had to go straight back out again to a birthday party. So my Sunday is definitely the day of rest! Just thought I’d post a few snaps I took wandering along Newcastle’s quayside.
And there’s just time for some Tull. Lovely.

Before practicing I read in The book about Guruji (see below). This time I opened the chapter by Lino Miele, the Italian yogi.
Lino Miele reminded me that the breath is the most important ingredient of this practice, then the movement and to match the breathing with the movements. Focusing on the breath calms the mind.

Promise of Restoration
1 While Jeremiah was still confined in the courtyard of the guard, the word of the LORD came to him a second time:
2 “This is what the LORD says, he who made the earth, the LORD who formed it and established it—the LORD is his name:
3 ‘Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.’
4 For this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says about the houses in this city and the royal palaces of Judah that have been torn down to be used against the siege ramps and the sword
5 in the fight with the Babylonians: ‘They will be filled with the dead bodies of the men I will slay in my anger and wrath. I will hide my face from this city because of all its wickedness.
6 ” ‘Nevertheless, I will bring health and healing to it; I will heal my people and will let them enjoy abundant peace and security.
7 I will bring Judah and Israel back from captivity and will rebuild them as they were before.
8 I will cleanse them from all the sin they have committed against me and will forgive all their sins of rebellion against me.
9 Then this city will bring me renown, joy, praise and honor before all nations on earth that hear of all the good things I do for it; and they will be in awe and will tremble at the abundant prosperity and peace I provide for it.’
10 “This is what the LORD says: ‘You say about this place, “It is a desolate waste, without men or animals.” Yet in the towns of Judah and the streets of Jerusalem that are deserted, inhabited by neither men nor animals, there will be heard once more
11 the sounds of joy and gladness, the voices of bride and bridegroom, and the voices of those who bring thank offerings to the house of the LORD, saying,
“Give thanks to the LORD Almighty,
for the LORD is good;
his love endures forever.”
For I will restore the fortunes of the land as they were before,’ says the LORD.
12 “This is what the LORD Almighty says: ‘In this place, desolate and without men or animals—in all its towns there will again be pastures for shepherds to rest their flocks.
13 In the towns of the hill country, of the western foothills and of the Negev, in the territory of Benjamin, in the villages around Jerusalem and in the towns of Judah, flocks will again pass under the hand of the one who counts them,’ says the LORD.

Good heavens, I am really getting out of my routine. So as a belated Saturday Matinee a couple of posters to help you keep the sabbath in a clean and wholesome manner. They are promoting an early anti-drugs movie of the Reefer Madness type. The Pace That Kills dates from 1935 and I’m guesing that ‘dope’ in this instance refers to cocaine, which was the trendy drug of choice among affluent delinquents of the 1930s (cf Agatha Christie’s Peril at End House, 1932, in which muderous young socialites are bonded by their shared coke habit).
[I've just seen another poster for this intriguing film, and yes it's definitely coaine their bashing on about].

Onam is definitely an occasion to reaffirm and recapture friendships. When maaveli ruled kerala, everyone was equal to all others, there were no disease, no cheating, no mental strains, not even bad measuring vessels.Â
Human mind is a highly partial measuring vessel. It expands to immeasurbly large dimensions when it comes for love for friends. But it should not be allowed to grow while measuring our hatred.Â
Friends, there would have been unsavoury arguments, criticisms, frayed emotions and tempers, and some friendships would have reached breaking points, But Friendships are like our virtues. They will outlive everything. There is no end to any friendship.
I take this occasion to wish all my beloved and respected friends, according to me the number is very huge, a very Happy Onam. I take this occasion to crave your indulgence in forgiving me if in my rustic below average cultural upbringing, I have knowingly or unknowingly behaved in any manner that would have marred our friendship. Please forgive me, we have to learn to forgive because we have to stand ultimated before our Maker with folded hands asking for forgiveness for whatever we have done. You are the Master when you forgive.
May the Grace of KRISHNA vist you on this happy occasion

This was much for a yogini who focuses almost the entire day on her even deep breath.
The movie started with an almost naked woman (Angelina Jolie), soaked in blood, tortured by Asian people (the enemies). Do the Americans still have so clear enemy pictures, I wondered. If this is the beginning, was my next thought, what else will still come…….
Well, we had another full day of teacher training and I am now spending some time catching up on a back log of email and so forth. We had a meeting this morning with the teacher trainees. We spent some time in meditation and then with some journal writing assignments. At 10:00 we had 30 or so additional people join us for a 2-hour class that I taught. I worked with theme of being a friend to ourselves and about how we might be loving to ourselves as we practice really hard things. We worked with the loving embrace of muscle energy and did a fair amount of hip opening work, standing pose work and made a foray into some arm balances. I had thought we might get to Visvamitrasana (Friend of the Universe Pose…Get it?) but as it turned out we go to eka hasta bhujasana and astavakrasana which was sufficiently full of challenge and good work.
We had time to debrief the class and then we had a lunch break. We worked in the afternoon primarily on verbal articulation skills with lots of drills to anchor clear, concise language habits. The students responded very well to the structure and to the drills and I think we are outlining some very clear and tangible ways to approach the sometimes daunting task of teaching Anusara Yoga.
I gave the group my own big confession as a yoga teacher today. And that is that I am a very boring teaching in terms of languaging classes. I am not a believer in the “have 25 different ways to say lift your arms up” nor do I get out a thesaurus before I teach or anything like that. I am very repetitive, very precise and very unimaginative as a yoga teacher in terms of instructing postures. I think I am very creative in terms of themes, in terms of sequencing and in terms of what poses I like to present in detail in any given class. So its not that I am not creative, its just I do not apply creativity to verbal instructions. Just the opposite, in fact.
I am a pretty bare bones kind of teacher where movement and action are concerned. I stick very close to the precision John outlined in the manual in terms of our principles and I use the formula “verb+body part+ in a direction” to teach almost everything. (lift your arms up, step your leg back, surrender your weight down, etc.) I also use very simple verbs in that formula- like step, lift, reach and stretch. I am not a big embellisher. I am not a poet. I am a “move your thighs in, reach them back and widen them apart” kind of girl for Inner Spiral and as far as Muscle Energy goes, I pretty much stick to “hug your muscles to the bone, draw to the midline and from your feet draw up into your hips” with very little variety.
Seriously, those of you who know me know that I am likely to say to say the same thing over and over again with very little variety or flair. But that’s me. Oddly, I say to do things and my student seem to try really hard to follow my instructions but its funny, its not because I am creative. I think its because I am commanding in the simplicity I offer.
At any rate, that’s what I teach other people to do. It is not the only way to teach but it sure is a good starting point. Strip down your language to the bare bones, slowly add in what is essential and then with great persistence stay aware because ineffective language habits when we teacher insidious and can creep in when we are not paying attention.
Anyway- its a fun group to work with and I am enjoying the 70-degree weather!

During the summer (and throughout the year too), I love eating/drinking delicious
Root Beer Floats. The basic recipe for a root beer float? Root Beer + Vanilla Ice Cream = A delicious Root Beer Float.
You can of course use other ice cream flavors but vanilla is pretty much the “traditional flavor” that’s normally used. You can also mix it up and use different sodas (like orange soda) to make other ice cream soda desserts.
Along with the soda and ice cream, you can add whatever toppings you like including different flavored syrups, whipped cream, fresh fruit, sprinkles, peanuts, and more.
Fresh fruit
My sister likes her root beer floats simple -just root beer and ice cream.
I like adding whipped cream and cherries.
My dad prefers ice cream sundaes. I made one with ice cream, strawberry syrup, fresh strawberries, and whipped cream. Sadly, we were out of peanuts. =(
So what’s your favorite summertime treat? Other favorites of mine are smoothies, Slurpees, and frozen yogurt!

1. I just read in the book about Guruji (see below) in the chapter of Mark and Joanne Darby that it was custom to do first and second series in a row those days. Practices could last up to 3 hours.
Meditation is not something we can do, but rather something that happens to us when the conditions are right. All meditation instruction can do is show you the way so that the conditions are right. the Vipassana 10 day meditation retreat showed me just this, where to start, how to avoid pitfalls, how to turn it into a habit.
It kept it real
The world of yoga and pranayama is a very vast and fruitful universe, there are countless teachers, and so, when it comes to the upper echelons of yoga, like for example when we are ready to start a concentration or meditation practice, it can get confusing.  Teachers may want to add whatever works for them, and inexperienced teachers can sometimes confuse students.  The Vipassana retreat focuses on just meditation, we are specifically told that we do not do pranayama or asana or anything. In the words of a funny friend of mine, during one of these retreats you eat, you poo, you sleep and you meditate, that is it. Keeping it real.
It felt like peace
For the first three days we sat for hours at the time focusing on the tip of the nose.  It took 3 days for my mind to slightly calm down.  Yes, three full days of at least 6 hours of meditation for the mind to begin to stop wondering about dinner, and even then sometimes it would drift.  After the third day the real instruction begins, but there is no excitement about it, it just goes deeper.  By the time I left the retreat my flight was cancelled and there was a possibility I would not return home for another 24 hours.  I was so calm and peaceful that I was able to find the right person to talk to and get myself on a flight that left 1 hour after the original one.  I also made friends with a nun who was on transit to NYC for her first experience in a monastery, and found out that my house had been sold regardless of the fact that we were having the greatest economic disaster of my living years.   These are the kind of accomplishments one can only get when in the flow, when it total  detachment, quietness, when in connection with the universal intelligence that lies at the center of inner silence.

7 Ways in which Vipassana changed my life for the better

If any one looks at the headlines of the daily newspaper in India, he or she won’t be amused. The paper is full of distressing news. Things certainly are not moving forward. Here are some facts:
1. Families below the poverty lines have actually increased after 63 years of independence.

The consummation of Motherhood… she has delivered the three a few days ago, she is tired, she had little food herself but the tiny three are sucking the vitals out of her. But she is in ecstacy and stupour… that is the instinct of a mother… God Created mothers so that he need not be present everywhere.

So Karen and I met up with the group today- Karen was a genius and scheduled the start time at 12:oo so I had a lovely morning to sleep in, practice meditation, asana, eat and prepare for the day. We did, however have a long session that went all the way until 5pm. Karen had assigned the group presentations during the last intensive so that was how we started and it was a very interesting way to meet a group and assess how best to support their growth. I could easily see where the strengths and weaknesses of the group were and so that was fun. The group is diverse in age, ability and experience and so that is kind of fun also. Karen is a great teacher and a strong leader and the students are kind, respectful, open and generous. I think we are going to have a great week.
Karen and I spent some time talking about co-teaching which was interesting. I have taught extensively with Darren and he and I have a way that we do it. I have taught a lot with Noah and he and I have a way that we do it. And so it is such a great opportunity to work with another person and develop a way to blend our mutual passions, perspectives and talents. I think there is no one way to do it- like so many things in Anusara Yoga, right? There is just more ways than one to be effective. At times this can even feel frustrating because it lacks a definite parameter upon which to gauge oneself and one’s efforts. And yet, at the end of the day, I am glad we have a variety of options that are acceptable and a variety of ways to go about sharing the method with others.
However, good communication is key. And one thing about communication is is that it is most effective when it is fresh and current rather than old, rotting and stale. Let something sit too long unsaid and it can really fester. So what’s fun about Karen is that we have a good rapport and along standing friendship and so exploring our different options together is mutually affirming, supportive and both of us are regarding the process pretty fluidly together.
Tomorrow I am going to kick off the day and talk a little about sequencing and then I will teach a class to the group (and to 30 people from the surrounding area who will join with our 28 folks) and then we will have a chance to debrief. After our lunch break, I anticipate a foray back into some of the articulation skills we practiced this afternoon. Anyway- time for me to head to bed. I need some rest.
All right, then. Bedtime.

Will the lion eat the sun dried grass in the forest, even if he is emaciated with hunger, even if he is dogged by old age, even if he is facing very difficult times, even if he has lost all his vigour and ebullience of his prime youth, what to say, even if he is facing a real threat of losing his own life?Â
The food for the king of the forest can be only the hard pieces of flesh he has extracted from the forehead of a rowdy elephant by splitting it with his powerful hits. The lion is very proud of his eminence and valour and his own life is not very important to it in comparison.
The master poet is explaining how a person with true self respect should behave. Bad times, poverty, ill health, and even the possibility of imminent death should not deter him from his upright and bold attitude, because death overtakes everyone one day or the other, but the really great people outlive the death of the physical body.

According to Foodforfreedom
S 510, the Food Safety Modernization Act, may be the most dangerous bill in the history of the US
1. It puts all US food and all US farms under Homeland Security and the Department of Defense, in the event of contamination or an ill-defined emergency
2. It would end US sovereignty over its own food supply by insisting on compliance with the WTO, thus threatening national security.
3. It would remove the right to clean, store and thus own seed in the US, putting control of seeds in the hands of Monsanto and other multinationals, threatening US security
4. It deconstructs what is left of the American economy. It takes agriculture and food, which are the cornerstone of all economies, out of the hands of the citizenry, and puts them under the total control of multinational corporations
Senate Bill S510 Makes it illegal to Grow, Share, Trade or Sell Homegrown Food
http://www.infowars.com/senate-bill-s…
Since the story first broke, a lot has happened. One reason for this could be that food is being poisoned. Collecting rainwater is now illegal in many states. Your intake is being controlled. For more information, visit the following articles as well:

S 510 is hissing in the grass
http://foodfreedom.wordpress.com/2010…
By Steve Green
S 510, the Food Safety Modernization Act, may be the most dangerous bill in the history of the US. It is to our food what the bailout was to our economy, only we can live without money.
“If accepted [S 510] would preclude the public’s right to grow, own, trade, transport, share, feed and eat each and every food that nature makes. It will become the most offensive authority against the cultivation, trade and consumption of food and agricultural products of one’s choice. It will be unconstitutional and contrary to natural law or, if you like, the will of God.” ~Dr. Shiv Chopra, Canada Health whistleblower
“If people let the government decide what foods they eat and what medicines they take, their bodies will soon be in as sorry a state as are the souls of those who live under tyranny.” ~Thomas Jefferson

On Tuesday, I paid
T.J. Maxx a little visit. As usual, I headed straight towards the “beauty section” hoping to find something other than the usual perfumes, soaps, and shampoos. I totally lucked out! I found a few Shiseido
Perfect Rouge lipsticks and
Luminizing Satin Eye Color eyeshadow singles for $16.99 each (retail $25.00.) I also picked up a LiLique Blush Brush for $6.99 -I was weary since I’ve never heard of LiLique but from the looks of it, the brush looked really nice and fluffy.
I didn’t get any eyeshadows since I hadn’t researched the Shiseido eyeshadows before but I did pick up 2 lipsticks in RS701 and BE109. I didn’t realize that BE109 was
Spiced Cream -which I already own and love, but I was happy to find out that RS701 was Serenity -which I have been wanting forever!
Anyways, here’s the brush..
Just to let you know, I’m really no brush expert but I’ll try my best to review the blush brush. At first, I thought I’d really love the brush -it was big (but not too big), soft, and very fluffy. However, the minute I gave it a test run, my love faded. For some reason, it just won’t apply any color to my cheeks. It does pick up some color but it won’t transfer onto my cheeks -no matter how many times I try. So this is definitely not a re-buy. My Sonia Kashuk brush works a lot better and actually applies the color to my cheeks.
Product Description
As for the lipsticks, I’m not sure if I’ll be keeping the Spiced Cream lipstick. Even though it’s my favorite nude lipstick in my collection, I’ve never finish any lipstick before so I don’t really see the point in having a backup. I’m really excited to try Serenity though and will be doing a review soon.
Have you had any great beauty finds at T.J. Maxx (or stores like it like Marshall’s or Ross?)

A tune a day keeps the spies away. The Laurie Johnson single release of this theme is much brassier, bolder and groovier than the rather tinny version used with the title sequence, which has also got distinctly ropy over the years. Never mind, at least here you get the solarised colours, Ingrid Pitt circa Vampire Lovers and – that tache! Full throttle Stilton all the way. I dedicate this to Mr Tyger-Sharke Parker, who has buggered off to Essex, taking his delightfully poncy shirts, a fabulous array of ties and his dinner party invites with him. We’ll miss him.

I love this post card. It’s copyrighted 1997, from the days when Who was still off the air and waiting to be reinvented. I went to a Dr Who convention in Chester about that time with my BBC chum Alan (we got in free, hurrah!), so I’m guessing I picked it up then. On the reverse it says ‘Monoliths – No. 8 in a series of 12′ and is copyrighted to IB Productions. I had a couple of others, one of the Tardis in a snowy landscape, the other also surrounded by standing stones, but as an aerial photo. I imagine they are knocking about the house somewhere, too, gathering a fine layer of dust just like this one. I assume they’re clever Photoshopped-type affairs; I can’t imagine they had a full-scale model Tardis to drag about – jolly clever though, eh? I’m fairly sure this is the Ring of Brodgar on Orkney, but there’s no information about the locality on the card.

So, continuing with my dropback meltdown, I asked John about it: Do you think I don’t drop back because of flexibility or because of fear? He thought about it for a while, then replied with that wizardly shinning in his eyes that “it is probably both“. I told him I am angry, and then he said something very clever, he suggested I use the anger to psyche myself into it, he offered that it will not just happen by relaxing and taking it easy.
What is doing less than your full practice like? I remember days when it’s more like painful surrender: the next pose simply cannot be done. But I also remember days when it’s not painful at all, but simply enough.

I am learning by looking at my pictures and watching my videos. I realize that I have sometimes another drishti than it is supposed to be. Some times ago I was searching in my books for the dirshtis and I found out that not always the authors have the same opinion where the drishti is, where to look at and so I made my own philosophy: mainly the eyes don’t move much and look in one direction, I thought.
But what I see is that the direction of the drishti can help to perform the asana correctly. Yesterday I took a picture of marichyasana C and I looked at my nose. First I thought: Yes I have only 20 sec to get into that asana, but let’s face it, the eyes don’t need much time to look in the correct direction. The correct direction for marichyasana C is the side. I think this is also a good reminder for the performance of this asana: It is always stretching upwards looking straight ahead (not down), then twisting.

Clay  Balls     A man was exploring caves by the Seashore.  In one of the caves he found a canvas bag with a bunch of hardened clay balls.  It was like someone had rolled clay balls and left them out in the sun to bake.  They didn't look like much, but they intrigued the man, so he took the bag out of the cave with him.  As he strolled along the beach, he would throw the clay balls one at a time out into the ocean as far as he could.  Â
He thought little about it, until he dropped one of the clay balls and it cracked open on a rock . Â Inside was a beautiful, precious stone! Â Â
Excited, the man started breaking open the remaining clay balls. Â Each contained a similar treasure. Â He found thousands of dollars worth of jewels in the 20 or so clay balls he had left. Â Â Â
Then it struck him. Â He had been on the beach a long time. He had thrown maybe 50 or 60 of the clay balls with their hidden treasure into the ocean waves. Â Instead of thousands of dollars in treasure, he could have taken home tens of thousands, but he had just thrown it away! Â Â
It's like that with people. Â We look at someone, maybe even ourselves, and we see the external clay vessel. Â It doesn't look like much from the outside.. Â It isn't always beautiful or sparkling, so we discount it. Â Â
We see that person as less important than someone more beautiful or stylish or well known or wealthy. Â But we have not taken the time to find the treasure hidden inside that person. Â Â
There is a treasure in each and every one of us. Â If we take the time to get to know that person, and if we ask God to show us that person the way He sees them, then the clay begins to peel away and the brilliant gem begins to shine forth. Â Â
May we not come to the end of our lives and find out that we have thrown away a fortune in friendships because the gems were hidden in bits of clay. May we see the people in our world as God sees them.  I am so blessed by the gems of friendship I have with you.  Thank you for looking beyond my clay vessel. Â
Â
APPRECIATE EVERY SINGLE
THING YOU HAVE, ESPECIALLY YOUR FRIENDS! Â
LIFE IS TOO SHORT AND FRIENDS ARE TOO FEW! Â
Â
Pass this on to another Clay Ball!!!
Do not ask GOD to Guide your Footsteps if you are not willing to MOVE your Feet'

Here are some scenes from the week in Tucson!
Really, I am just so inspired by everyone and all that they gave to make the week wonderful. When I think back to two years ago when me and Darren offered our first Immersion together I am pretty astounded to reflect on the personal growth I feel like I have experienced and the huge shifts and changes the students have experienced. There is nothing really better than to be ushering students into the Seat of the Teacher when the students are so full of heart, dedication and tenacity. I seriously feel inspired for the future of Ansuara yoga after this week.
I can’t say it enough- trust the process–it works!

Repurchase: No
Price: $10.00 (retail $14.00) (0.10 oz)
Product: 8/10
Packaging: 7.5/10
Value: 9/10
Overall Grade: B-
While on my trip, I visited the
Carlsbad Premium Outlets and of course had to stop by CCO (The Cosmetics Company Store.) They didn’t have too much but I did find MAC’s A Rose Romance lipstick which I wanted but my MAC store had sold out of. I decided that for only 10 bucks, I’d give it a go.
Helpful Hint: If you plan on going to any of the Premium Outlet Centers (here are listings and locations of all their outlet centers), be sure to sign up for their free VIP Club. Members receive all sorts of deals including a free coupon book (retail is $5.00) that includes many of the stores. Members also receive access to many printable coupons for different stores and restaurants (coupons vary by outlet center.)
The Packaging: MAC lipsticks are packaged in sleek black tubes with silver bands and lettering. To me, the packaging is pretty average -there aren’t any “special touches.”
Product Ingredients
The Product: I’ve stated before that MAC lipsticks (in any finish) are not my favorite. For me, lustre finishes tend to work a little better than the other finishes but my lips still get super dry afterwards. I know MAC lipsticks work great for lots of people but for whatever reason, they always dry out my lips.
A Rose Romance feels neither dry nor moisturizing on my lips but after wearing it for a few hours, my lips become dried out. On my lips, the lipstick accentuates some of my dry patches. However, if I exfoliate prior to wearing the lipstick, it would look fine.
Like all MAC lipsticks, A Rose Romance has a vanilla scent that goes away once it’s applied. The lipstick lasts for about 3 hours (without eating/drinking.)
MAC A Rose Romance Lipstick
The Color: A Rose Romance is a sheer, light, natural pink with some mauve to it. It’s not incredibly pigmented but it’s slightly buildable so you do get some color. The lipstick also has a nice sheen to it.
Swatches.. (The “no flash” lip swatch better resembles the actual color.)
Above (no flash): MAC A Rose Romance Lipstick
Above (no flash): MAC A Rose Romance Lipstick
Above (with flash): MAC A Rose Romance Lipstick
Overall: The color isn’t as great as I thought it would be but it’s a nice, natural pink for days where I just want a more natural look. It would also pair nicely with a smokey eye.
Honestly though, I haven’t reached for any of my MAC lipsticks for months because they always end up making my lips dry. However, what tends to draw me back in is the great color selection and low price. And if my lips didn’t always get so dry from MAC lipsticks, the grade would definitely be higher.
Where To Buy: Try your CCO =)

I said I thought it would be fun to have atune a day rather than one limited to Tuesday, so what better to kick off than a video starring puppets designed by Peter Fowler (of Super Furries covers fame), designed by the delectable Felt Mistress?

Well, I have so much to write about at the end of the week of teacher training. I am, however, going to start with a commercial for Darren’s new ipone app. Click here to see the preview!
I am spending a little time on this commercial because it also happens to be Darren’s 39th Birthday today. I am thinking it would be really cool if we could get 1008 people to buy the app- after all, it’s only $2.99- and practice with it today. I think it would be such a cool thing for him to know that people all over the world were doing this practice on his birthday.
I got to thinking about this because Darren is such an inspiring practitioner and those of you who know him and his work, you know that if it is one thing his life speaks to, it’s the power of practice. And that is the awesome thing that this app offers people of all ages and abilities- a practical, accessible and convenient way to practice yoga. Today. Now. Anywhere.
So, join the fun, join the birthday celebration. Buy the app. Download it. Practice with it. Tell all your friends and wish Darren Rhodes a very Happy Birthday!

Second part of the opening chapter of the second Professor Gothick book, continued from last week’s Wordy Thursday.
‘Oh gawd,’ he said, ‘I’m lying on a coffin!’
At that moment thunder and lightning crashed together in the heavens, and Jackson saw then what had caught his eye moments before. It was a brass nameplate set into the lid of the coffin. There was a strange name engraved on it. One word: ‘Batula’. But Skipper Jackson could not read and he was interested only in the fact that the nameplate was of brass and the coffin carved from expensive mahogany. All thoughts of rum had left his head.
‘There’s someone of quality lying in this,’ he thought. ‘Someone worth a posh casket. A fine lady p’raps. Still wearin’ ’er best gems.’
Jewellery, that was what was in Jackson’s head now. He had felt a momentary thrill of superstitious fear when he first saw what he had fallen upon, but Jackson had seen too much death while at sea to feel squeamish about a corpse. In fact, one of his first jobs as a sailor lad had been sewing into a canvas bag the body of a crewman who had fallen from the rigging before it was dumped in the ocean. He’d had to do that job on many occasions since – life on the old sailing vessels had been an uncertain one at best. Greed conquered any other scruples Jackson might have had and his only concern now was how to open the coffin. He wished then he hadn’t thrown away his umbrella, it might have served as a lever. A few moments scrabbling about, however, turned up a very flat stone, almost sharp at the edges. That would do!
Jackson prised the stone under the lid of the coffin and leant his weight upon it. An encouraging cracking came from the wood but then the stone slipped from his hand. The old sailor swore like only an old sailor can, and tried again. The screws fastening down the lid were good screws, and he failed a second time. Next he tried using another rock to bash against the flat stone, improvising a hammer and chisel affair. In this way he managed to split one of the screws and he had another go at using the flat stone like a lever.
This time the coffin lid gave way a good few inches, and Jackson got his hands under it and heaved. With a loud crack, the wood split from its brass screws and the lid was flung onto the pebbles. But Jackson cried out in pain. One of the split screws had caught his left hand and gashed it badly. Its palm and fingers were wet with blood.
‘I’ll be damned!’ he cursed. But there were more pressing matters than a hurt hand. He peered into the coffin. It was difficult to see in the dark but he was able to work out at least that the person inside it was not the ‘fine lady’ he had hoped it would be, but a gentleman.
‘C’mon,’ said Jackson, ‘where’s the lightning when yer need it?’
He didn’t have to wait long. Ribbon lightning snaked across the sky and for a few seconds Jackson was able to get a good look at his prize. A long, refined and very white face lay framed against rich crimson silk. Slender white hands with long tapering fingers were folded on its breast. On one of these fingers was a thick gold ring set with a blood red stone. That certainly caught Jackson’s eye. He was also struck with how shabbily the body had been dressed. Despite the richness of the casket and the obvious value of the gold ring, the body inside might as well have been that of a tramp. A knee-length brown coat fastened with a dozen buttons, some of which were missing, coarse trousers and a pair of clumpy old boots were its only attire. Jackson shrugged at the mystery, however. It was of no great interest – not compared to the ring.
In the impenetrable darkness which followed the lightning, he fumbled in the coffin. The hands felt startlingly cold against Jackson’s, even though his were almost blue from the rain and the bitter wind. They also felt very soft. He grabbed the ring and tugged and pulled and twisted it. It wouldn’t come off. He tugged and pulled and twisted it again. It wouldn’t come off.
‘Devil take me! Why haven’t I a knife?’ he complained.
The flat stone which had been so useful in opening the coffin was too blunt to cut off a finger. Then a happy thought struck Jackson. It would be fine for smashing out a few teeth. Rich people usually had gold fillings. Even a small amount of gold would be a fortune to destitute Skipper Jackson. The old man pushed his left hand between the cold, dead lips of the corpse. The teeth, he noticed, felt surprisingly long. And sharp. In the dark, he was unable to see how his blood had stained the corpse’s lips, nor how it had reddened the blue, dead tongue. He waited for another bolt of lightning to show him which teeth contained the little shiny nuggets of gold. It soon came. Crack! Thunder crashed about. The lightning flashed. A great blaze of sudden light.
Jackson peered down at the dead white face of the corpse. He could see no gold. What he saw was the corpse’s eyes. They were open. They glared into his own. They shone with an evil light, with intelligence and rage. And then the teeth – the too long, too sharp teeth – sank down upon his hand and Skipper Jackson screamed with agony and terror as his hot red blood gushed into the mouth of the corpse.

Janmashtami the Birthday of shri Krishna: Janmashtami is also known as Gokulashtami or Krishnashtami. It is the birthday of Hindu god Shri Krishna. Lord Krishna was born to king Vasudeva and Devaki in Kansa’s jail in midnight, on the eighth day of the second fortnight in the month of Shravana. Shri Krishna is considered the eighth incarnation of Lord Vishnu and one of the most famous gods of Hindu religion. He is considered to be the lord Vishnu’s most glorious incarnations. He was born in the ‘Rohini’ nakshatram (star). Krishna was born on a dark, stormy and windy night to end the rule and atrocities of his maternal uncle Kansa. Kansa was a demon, who tortured sages and his subjects. He made numerous plans to kill Krishna, but he never succeeded in his missions.
As shri Krishna appeared himself in the midnight, he was transferred to Gokul, where he spent his childhood with his friends under the guidance of Nand Baba and Yashoda. In his childhood, he killed and restored many demons. The main objective of Krishna’s birth was to demolish the demon Kansa and other evil powers of that time. He appeared on the earth approximately 5,227 years ago.

I went out Monday night -just shopping and eating with some of the girls. I only picked up a few things but here’s what I got:
I stopped at Sanrio to pick up the Little Twin Stars ring I wanted on one of my previous visits. I wanted to redeem my stamp card (with the new stamp cards, if you have it fully stamped, you can redeem it for $5 off your purchase.)
Little Twin Stars & My Melody rings- I paid a total of $1.64 (includes tax!)
The cashier/Sanrio employee was so kind. I told him about my terrible experiences with another Sanrio I frequent so he gave me extra stamps (on my stamp card), 2 trinkets, and the last limited edition 50th anniversary bag they had.
I was ecstatic -I had been waiting for the trinkets to come back. I used to collect them when I was little and I’m trying to rebuild my collection again. I was also extremely happy that I got the bag -I’m so in love with it. The smallest things can make me so happy.. =)
Everyone wanted to stop at Wet Seal so I looked around. I was really surprised to find something that I absolutely loved since I don’t really shop there. I bought the
French Terry Wrap ($15.50) in tan/olive stripes. I really didn’t like the striped versions but they ran out of my size in the solid oatmeal (the one I really wanted) and the black.
I didn’t get it at first but just as the mall was about to close, I ran back to the store and bought it. I love the cut, fit, and side pockets -but I feel like the stripes make me look like a clown. I also don’t like the material -it looks cheap.
Some parts of both photos look blurry -it’s because I really need to give my mirror a good washing so sorry about that!
What do you think?? I need your help. Should I keep it? It really stinks because they don’t give refunds -only store credit. I was going to return it and then buy the oatmeal color online but it’s just such a hassle. So, please help me decide! I can be so indecisive.
And lastly, I went to Sephora and got a sample of
Make Up For Ever glitter in #4 -the one I’ve been really wanting. I can finally cross these off
my list. I really don’t need the full size so I’m totally happy.. plus it was FREE!
That’s it for my Monday hauls. Let me know what you think of the sweater/wrap from Wet Seal. Should I keep it?

One can always maintain intimacy with a bosom friends by being just natural.
With appropriate strategy and show of strength one can keep his enemy at bay.
A miser can be kept pleased only by supply of more funds,( so also every officer superintendent)
One's favourite God can be propitiated through service ( to all humans).
A beautiful young lady can be made happy through romance (not for old uncles like me….I just quote hitopadesam). One's relatives will be happy if one shows the sense of equality and identity with them. We lose many close relations by flaunting our own so called status. For the parents we are just the sons and daughters and for the siblings we are only brothers or sisters.( for them does it make any difference that you are a top bureaucrat or a stinkingly rich businessman?)Â
To keep a ferocious being away from attacking us is only by vocal praise in place or out of place ( the ferocious thing can appear in so many forms….wife, boss. mother in law, to cite a few examples) .
The only way the preceptor can be kept  happy is by prostrating at his feet (it will do more good to the disciple than the teacher..especially when the disciple is prostrating to just pull the master down).
The learned person will be pleased when one shares his knowledge and erudition with humility. .

Three fuzzy snaps from the Centre for Fortean Zoology’s Weird Weekend held last weekend in the community centre of the North Devon village of Woolfardisworthy (Woolsery for short). Under the logo we have Jon Downes, the director of the organisation – surely just the geezer to hunt man-beasts worldwide – and below him zoological director Richard Freeman with his even furrier friend Orang Pendek. Weird stuff to be sure.
Pretty cool, though. Got to meet fortean supremo Andy Roberts who, incredibly, turns out to have moved about five miles away from me a few years ago; re-met Mike Dash, the former Fortean Times publisher who once offered me a job as a sub-editor on that esteemed journal; the Danish cryptozoologist Lars Thomas; and lots of other interesting chaps. Thanks to Lars’ research, they are now convinced that a leopard or two prowls in the woods around the village. The ‘Tasmanian tiger’ skin he examined turned out to belong to a small African antelope, though. Can’t win ‘em all. I have high hopes that Mike and Andy will both be writing for Paranormal Magazine in the near future.

Hi Darling*:
So, I was doing yoga, yesterday, after my run, and was wondering . . . Is there an optimal location/direction that one should position a yoga mat (i.e. towards East, or Northwest)? I realize this may be a weird question, but it got me wondering about whether or not there was an optimal, zen-capturing position for a yoga mat?
xo Angie
Should she face this way . . .
. . . Or that way?
Hi Angie:
Not a weird question at all! I’m happy you thought to inquire about the optimal “zen-capturing” placement of a yoga mat. Traditionally, yoga is practiced facing the sun. Sun salutations (surya namaskar), for example, literally “salute” the sun, so, ideally, we position our mats accordingly.
In the event that this is not possible given the layout of your space (at home or in a yoga studio), I recommend doing what feels best. Feng shui, a Chinese system of aesthetics, may naturally be a factor without your knowing. For instance, you might gravitate toward an area of your home that feels light and airy for your yoga practice, as your body will absorb these energies by being there. Also, you might not enjoy resting in sivasana with your feet toward the door, as the Chinese believe this is an inauspicious position. (I once heard that the reason for this is that the dead are carried out this way. Spooky, I know . . .).
In summary, face the sun if you can. If you can’t, choose what feels best. Good luck with your home practice!
xo Om Gal

Interesting, interesting. I appreciate nowadays that I take a day off from yoga each week. It is the Saturday. My practices are very intensive during the week.
This was not always the case and then I felt the urge to practice on Saturdays as I had a lot of time during the weekend (no job).
During this day off, I have the feeling as if
1. my body adopts what it was learning during the week. It recovers from the effort.
2. Also motivation remains on a high level.
3. I have a bit more time for all the other things that have to be done, too. This reduces the stress level, too.
I have not the feeling that my body becomes too stiff due to one day off, even though the day off can be felt during the next practice. I usually start with primary again, it is “modester” than second series.
I’m currently planning a bridal shower for a sweet friend of mine who is the epitome of style and class. And although it’s been done a thousand times, I couldn’t think of a more fitting theme for this bride to be that a Breakfast At Tiffany’s Bridal Shower!

I used this lovely print as my inspiration for the shower…

Next were these yummy cupcakes with their dainty pearls which led me to an inspiration board.

I then decided to make the invitations and table numbers myself, here is what I came up with:

All I have to do now is go shopping for my supplies and plan a menu! Here’s what I’ll need:

Looking forward to sharing the results with you, because of course your all invited! Married gals, did your bridal showers have themes? Non-married gals, would you want a themed shower? Let me know!

I made it a goal at the beginning of the year to drop back from standing to back bend and come back up again, but it is not happening. My back is not open, I fear falling, I am in a dark place, I think I will never do it, or dare. I wanted to celebrate, to do it, be good at it.
But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: with the Lord, a day is like a thousand years and a thousand years is like a day.

So here is exciting news…
The workshop that Noah Maze and I taught back in July at Yogaglo is now for sale: http://www.yogaglo.com/blog/2010/08/noah-maze-christina-sell-in-your-living-room/
You can visit the site and check out the class descriptions and then buy individual classes or the whole shebang. It was a great weekend and I am so excited to be able to share it with everyone.
Teacher Training continues to go well. Today we worked on Sequencing towards a peak pose and spent a lot of time with Q&A and then we talked about ethics, adjustments and observation. The group continues to inspire me with their dedication and their skill and their sincere desire to represent the method with integrity.
One thing that I am really thinking about this week as I am looking at this group of students who are coming up as a the next generation of Anusara Yoga teachers is how important my friends and colleagues in Anusara Yoga are to me. I keep reflecting on the early days of my involvement in the method and how, at the time, I was having a good time and learning the yoga and so on but there was no thought in my mind that many of those people I was with at the time would come to be my best friends and my biggest cheerleaders and truest sources of support.
So I keep thinking about how perhaps, some of the people in this room are, even as we speak, forging friendships today that might be there for them ten years from now. I find that an inspiring thought. There is, it seems to me, several levels of “what’s going on” in these trainings. There is the surface level of learning sequencing, articulation skills and hands- on adjustments and so forth. There is also the level of personal inquiry and soul searching that each person goes through in a week like this. And there are the friendships. And so on like that. Each level has its own texture and its own demands and its own unique beauty.
More tomorrow.

Price: $9.00 ($32.00 @ LORAC & Sephora.com) (0.34 oz/ 9.5 g)
Product: 9/10
Packaging: 7/10
Value: 10/10 (based on $9.00 Sweet Steal price)
Overall Grade: A-
Last week, I picked up the
LORAC Perfectly Lit Oil-Free Luminizing Powder in Spotlight at Sephora for a sweet price of only 9 bucks. It was one of Sephora’s weekly Sweet Steals (I think that’s what they’re called!) For whatever reason, ”Spotlight” is listed at the full price on Sephora.com but I know for sure that they had it in stores at $9.00 just a few days ago so check your Sephora store if you’re interested. Otherwise, it’s on
Sephora.com at the full price of $32.00.
Sephora always has a bunch of products at the register that are priced super low -usually discontinued products but sometimes they’ll put out current products too. In the past, I’ve gotten things like Urban Decay Liquid Liner for around $8.00, a set of 2 Benefit Creaseless Creams for around $10.00, and a Cover FX Setting Powder for $8.00.
The Packaging: The luminizing powder is packaged in a sleek, silver compact that snaps closed. I don’t like how the “snap” doesn’t close down all the way-even though it’s fully closed (see above photo.) I’ve also found that the compact easily opens up (possibly because of the “snap”) and is slightly loose so I’m a bit weary of carrying this in my purse.
What’s nice about Perfectly Lit is that a mirror is included inside the compact. It also comes with a round sponge -but I prefer using a brush to apply the powder. Lastly, the compact is not prone to fingerprints and easily wipes clean. I like all the upsides to the compact but I’m not loving that the closure is sort of “loose” and could easily open up in my purse or makeup bag.

Product Description & Directions
The Product: Perfectly Lit is a great highlighter -something for those who don’t want a matte finish but also want to steer clear of anything overly shimmery/glittery. This provides a luminous, natural looking glow and isn’t flashy or glittery at all. The powder pairs nicely with both neutral and dramatic looks.
The key is to only apply the powder with a light hand and really blend or it may look too pale on us ladies with medium and tanner skin tones. Other than that, don’t be afraid that if it may look too light at first -I thought the same thing until I tried it.
The powder is also oil-free, which may be very good news to some people. Because I have super dry skin, I’m usually afraid of any oil-free products as I actually need more oil -not less! Perfectly Lit has been fine though and hasn’t caused my skin to dry out (or become more oily.) The powder is average in the “long-wearing” category -it holds up for about 4-5 hours on bare skin (no primer, foundation, etc.)
The Color: Sephora.com describes Spotlight as a “warm beige.” However, on my skin, it looks like a very pale, almost white, champagne glow. The shimmer is very fine so instead of looking like you’ve got a whole disco ball forming on your cheeks, you get a nice, glowy sheen that acts as a perfect highlight.
I’ve heard that Spotlight is the darkest of the 3 Perfectly Lit shades (also includes Luminous and Radiant) which really surprises me. Spotlight is already pretty light so I’m wondering why they don’t produce darker shades. Even though this is a light shade, I think it will be fine of anyone with fair, light, medium, tan, and caramel skin tones. However, I’m not totally sure if this will work for ladies with very deep skin tones -it may look too “icey.” It really bugs me that there aren’t any darker shades available.
Above (no flash): LORAC Perfectly Lit Oil-Free Luminizing Powder in Spotlight (This a swatched heavily because I wanted to show the color. You do not need this much -just add a little and blend.)
Overall: LORAC has been one of my favorite brands for quite awhile now and I’m happy to see that they’re still producing products that I love. I can honestly say that I’ve never had a total “miss” with any LORAC product that I’ve tried. I either think they’re good, very good, or great and this is no exception! Perfectly Lit in Spotlight provides a lovely, dewy, luminous glow that really adds (in a good way of course!) to any makeup look.

Think I might upload a tune a day instead of just Tuesdays. There’s so much good stuff out there, I feel I might as well. Don’t know what theme I’d give Tuesday, though. Anyway, here is Wire who despite my punk roots I failed to discover first time round. It was this single (I bought the 12″) on their first re-formation in the late 80s which brought them to my attention, and lots of other people too, I’m sure. It was Louise in Leicester who told me they’d started up again – and she DID buy their stuff back in the I Am The Fly days.

Alright, I’ll admit it – I may not change the station when Justin Beiber’s on the radio and I might just think he’s adorable. I’ll even divulge that I downloaded “Baby” to my work out play list BUT apparently I’m not the only one that’s got a case of the Bieber Fever. Check out Kim Kardashian’s photoshoot with the Bieb’s for ELLE magazine:
Looks like the had a great time. Sweet of Kim to be a good sport and play along – what a lucky young man!

I’m obviously not a beauty blogger, and I don’t even read any blogs that cover that kind of stuff as it just doesn’t interest me enough. But saying that, I had to share with you my thoughts on a moisturiser I bought a couple of weeks ago. At Aldi.
As much as I try to touch the floor in Prasarita C, my arms refuse to go there. ”Let gravity do the work” say the very advance practitioners, and they might be right, but still I feel I need to push, at least a little, or else they won’t ever touch.
This is a preview of
Prasarita Padottanasana C, oh will those arms ever touch the floor!?

Karandavasana is a balancing pose:
Without the adjustments of a teacher it is difficult to practice the correct form of this asana.
As I am not able to fold my legs into padmasana when I do pincha mayurasana I had to find an approach. My yoga teacher M taught me an alternative.
Till now I even do pincha mayurasana close to a wall. So this is the first step in order to be able to do karandavasana: Pincha mayurasna must be stable in the middle of the room.
The video above shows one exercise that I do to approach karandavasana.
Next steps:
1. I will try to come up with straight legs.
2. I want to remain for five breaths when my legs are on my arms. This makes it more difficult to come up again.
Another exercises, that I do:
1. I go into sirsasana and then try to lift up my head and my body into pincha mayurasana.
Second series is on the schedule today. I’m looking forward to it. Only through practice we learn to master an asana.

Dear Sir,

This happened all of a sudden,
but based on a photo fished out from the net .
I am not publishing this in the web without your YES
The yoga community is abuzz this week over the film Eat, Pray, Love, based on the eponymous spiritual memoir by Elizabeth Gilbert. I’m looking forward to sharing my thoughts on the movie soon, so please stay tuned.
Since we have these promises, dear friends, let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God.

Good evening.
Here are a few scenes from Teacher Training. We really had an amazing day today. Today I outlined a sequence for the group to work with and then I taught the first side of the pose and the group took turns teaching the second side. Everyone in the group today got a chance to teach in front of the whole group and I must say for day 4 of a training, I have never seen such skill in action. This is a very high caliber group and not just the fact that people did a good job technically implementing the skills we have been working with. I think the thing that stands out a lot in the group is the compassion, the support and the way it is safe enough to feel unsafe.
We talked a lot about that today in the group discussions about how fear can manifest when we teach and I think for me that feeling totally confident is not really the point of teacher training. Feeling safe enough to be vulnerable, to feel safe enough to act in the presence of fear is really what teacher training is all about. It is one of my all-time favorite teachings from John. BAck in the old days, he used to tell s, “feel your fear AND dedicate to something Higher than the fear.”
And that’s what people did today- they took bold steps forward in the midst of nervousness and fear and we all learned and grew and even laughed some together. D taught some hands-on adjustments during the afternoon which was stellar.
Okay- well more could be said, but the day was long and the hour is getting late and tomorrow will come early! More soon.

Garbha pindasana is one of the four
core poses (beside marichyasana D, kurmasana and baddha konasana), perhaps because so many yogis and yoginis struggle with this pose. I remember that I did a variation in the beginning I wrapped my arms around my legs. That I had to role I didn’t know. Instead of kukkutasana, I lifted my body up into utpluthih.
This asana needs a bit of preparation. when I know that I practice primary:
- Either I put lotion on my skin after the shower before my practice,
- or I put yoga trousers on that last till my ankles, so that my arms can slide easily.
I know I’ve written way too many posts on the whole “MAC & Rodarte” issue (
here,
here, &
here) but I thought it was important to spread word that MAC is officially dropping the collection altogether (I first heard about this after reading
this post on Of Face and Fingers.) I was very happy with MAC’s previous decision to donate all the proceeds and while I’m happy that they’re not putting out this collection anymore, I’m wondering, “Well, how much will they even donate now?” Knowing how MAC collections are, I’m pretty sure a lot of money would’ve been made through this collection -especially since it would’ve been for a great cause.
Here’s the
post from Facebook:
M·A·C Decides Not to Ship M·A·C Rodarte Makeup Collection Out of Respect for Women & Girls of Juárez and their Families
by MAC Cosmetics on Monday, August 16, 2010 at 5:27pm
This decision will not impact M·A·C ‘s commitment to donate all of its projected profits from the collection to benefit the women and girls of Juarez.
During my mini-vacation, I picked up a few things here and there. I definitely didn’t go all out -I was saving for Fabulous Felines and Venomous Villains.
A look at everything..
LORAC Perfectly Lit in Spotlight, LORAC Baked Matte Satin Blush in Exposed, MAC A Rose Romance. The Perfectly Lit powder was only $9!! Go pick one up!
The day before I left, I went to Sephora to pick up my free VIB Swag Bag. Sadly, they were all out (and this was the 1st day too!) but since I was really upset they were all out, they gave me a bag of samples.
Burberry, Bliss, Lancome, Clinique, BE Buxom, Givenchy
I thought this little cell phone charm was so cute! But my phone doesn’t have a “hook” thingy for it.
I got these from Downtown Disney! Belle is actually my favorite but she looked funny. I thought Ariel looked the best.. All the other princesses didn’t really look like themselves.
I also picked up some beads. I would’ve bought more but each was 90 cents -totally overpriced! I didn’t even want to buy these 4 but gave in because they’re adorable.
We went to the
Carlsbad Premium Outlets and I picked up these Chinese Laundry “Sweet Revenge” jelly flats from Factory Brand Shoes. I ended up returning them when I got back because they were too big -they’d slip off when I walked. I LOVE the way they look -very different from anything I have but even a size 5 was too big (I’m usually a 5.5.)
I love them..
<3
GAP Black/Brown Racerback dress- $17.99 on sale! This can be dressed up or down.
GAP Ruffle Dress- $39.99. I ended up returning it because I thought it was way too expensive for what it was. Plus the quality wasn’t as good -probably because it’s GAP Outlet.
GAP T-Shirt Dress- $4.97 on sale. I love this dress and it was so cheap too!

GAP Cardigan- $34.99. This was another one of the things that was too expensive for what it was. It ended up being a return. I rather get one from (regular) GAP that’s thicker.
At Disneyland, I got 2 Vinylmation figures. The thing about these figures is that they’re in boxes with now “windows” so you can’t see which one you’re buying. There are several different collections but if you buy 2 from the same collection, you run the risk of buying 2 of the same kind!
I bought 2 figures (one for me and one for my boyfriend) from the Urban #2 Collection. Above are the designs included in the collection.
Luckily, I got 2 different designs! The one on the right was actually the one I wanted -I wasn’t too fond of the on the right. I don’t get why they’d make one like that! It looks like someone dunked mud/poo/chocolate onto Mickey!! =O
At Legoland, they were having “Star Wars Day” so they gave out free stuff. Here’s part of a really cool poster they gave out (contains many of the Star Wars characters in LEGO form) and a limited edition LEGO brick.
That’s it for my haul! I’ll be doing reviews for the makeup I bought soon.

Here are some photos from the 2 days I spent in Disneyland. I didn’t have much to choose from -400+ of my pictures got deleted. =(
This was from Sleeping Beauty’s Castle. I took pictures of all the storybooks but they got deleted!!
I love Beauty and the Beast.
Maleficent!
Inside Tarzan’s Tree House..
Some Alice in Wonderland jewelry!
This was my brother, me, my sister, and my mom (in the front row) on the
Twilight Zone Tower of Terror ride at Disney’s California Adventure. The setting of the ride (like inside where you wait in line) is super creepy and I thought the ride would be really scary. It turned out to be awesome!! This was definitely one of the best rides of both the 2 parks.
Mickey pretzel!
I loved this -it was inside a gigant snow globe thingy..
We went to
Claim Jumper one of the days for dinner -OMGosh my dinner was SO good! I’ve been there before but it wasn’t good at all so I was super surprised at how delicious everything was. The fries were especially good -they were so yummy.
That’s all of my vacation pictures. Have you been anywhere recently? Anywhere far or near -I’d love to hear!

Can you tell that I get a backup of delicious things to write when I hold off or get too busy?
Briefly: on teaching yourself and the tradition. On the idea of guru and spiritual friend. An ego simile. Probably a number of Trungpa citations (and more death). Finally, and throughout, “relational” (as opposed to discrete).
This is a preview of
Being A/Your Teacher, Guru, Ego, Trungpa, Relational

@balaji, I for one agree with you fully… but this thread is about poyyars, persons who are Iyers on the surface fully but do not follow the essential scriptural prescriptions. The definition of a poyyar on the basis of non performance of pancha mahpathakas may be more relevant than the six conditions prescribed by my brother narayanan who has simply listed six things out of a huge number of items. In my opinion it is not wrong to live as a poyyar. Unless we change with times we lose our grounds. Nowadays the discussion on brahminism and spiritualism leads to a journey far away from the reasonable highways and byways. But there should be a maamiyar or swamiyaar to point out what it was in the old days. What I quoted was from a vedic stanza reproduced in mahanarayanopanisat and even while giving vyakhyaanam to that years ago, the interpreters were aware that all these so called sins were being committed and this mantra was only an expiatory measure. The ganga episode in Mahabharatam is a fait accompli, and nowhere in bharatham that episode is justified. Infanticide was the greatest sin for which Kamsa got killed by his nephew. Even gurutalpagamanam may not be relevant today because in certain circumstances one's own wife can become ones teacher is a university.. and then is it a mahapatakam to sleep with one's own wife?
The above quotation is simply a limited addendum to the qualification of a POYYAR and nothing more. In fact if I have only one son out of a married life exceeding 25 years at least one of the sins has been repeated a few times…this will be true with most people including iyers or Poyyars whatever you would like to call them
