Guru Parampara
The day of full moon, Poornima in the month of  Ashada masa of hindu calender is celebrated as Guru Poornima.

This year Guru Poornima is celebrated on  25th July.  To know the exact date of event in your region, check the link PANCHANGAM  available on right side of this blog.

Guru Poornima is celebrated traditionally as birthday of Bagawan Vyasa maha muni. He is aso called Veda Vyasa, as he is the compiler of the vedas. He also wrote puranas so that common people could also get  benefitted from the knowledge of vedas. He conveyed spiritual principles in  the  form of stories and parables. The period Chaturmasa vratham also begins from this day.

Gurus are often equated with God. Just like moon shines with the reflection of sun light.. similarly, all disciples dazzle like moon with the knowledge gained from their respective guru’s.

A few lines describing Guru’s signficance and Guru-Disciple relationship from Guru Charitra and Shirdi Sai Satcharitra:

1. “Even if Lord Vishnu or Lord Shiva is angry with his devotee, Shri Guru can surely protect him. But if Shri Guru is enraged, even Shri Vishnu or Shiva cannot protect him.” – A quote from Guru charitra.  To know more about  Guru leelas – Read Guru Charitra , A wonderful and sacred  book on Guru leelas/miracles, Guru-Disciple  relationship.

2. Mrs.Radhabhai Deshmukh, an old woman, upon hearing Baba’s fame visited Shirdi. After having Baba’s darshan, decided to accept Baba as her Guru. She insisted Baba to give her Upadesh.  Baba convinced her saying “He never received any Upadesh from his Guru”.

BABA explained her  the characteristics of  GURU…

“My Guru never expected any other thing from Me. He never neglected Me, but protected Me at all times. I lived with him, and was sometimes away from him; still I never felt the want or absence of his love. He always protected Me by his glance, just as the tortoise feeds her young ones, whether they are near her or away from her on the other side of the river bank, by her loving looks. Oh mother, My Guru never taught Me any Mantra, then how shall I blow any Mantra in your ears? Just remember that Guru’s tortoise-like loving glance gives us happiness. Do not try to get Mantra or Upadesh from anybody. Make Me the sole object of your thoughts and actions; and you will, no doubt, attain Paramartha (the spiritual goal of life). Look at Me whole-heartedly, and I in turn look at you similarly. Sitting in this Masjid, I speak the truth, nothing but the truth. No Sadhanas, nor proficiency in the six Shastras, are necessary. Have faith and confidence in your Guru. Believe fully, that Guru is the sole Actor or Doer. Blessed is he who knows the greatness of his Guru and thinks him to be Hari, Hara and Brahma (Trimurti) Incarnate.”

On this auspicious day, all disciples and devotees worship their respective Gurudevas (spiritual precepter) and offer their deepest respects by reading  holy books, visiting temples, offering food/clothes to the needy, gifting sacred books to the eligible persons etc.,

In temples dedicated to Gurus like Dattatreya, SHIRDI Saibaba, GuruRaghavendra Swami, Adi Shankaracharya, ShreeMadhwacharya, Guru Dakshina moorthy (lord Shiva’s form of Guru/teacher), Akkalkot Maharaj, GuruNanak, ShreeRamana Maharshi etc., activities like  special prayers, annadana, bhajans and discourses are arranged.

Saibaba LIVE darshan from Shirdi

GURU PADUKA STOTRAM – A beautiful stotra composed by  Shree Adi Shankaracharya. (Most chanted stotram on Gurupoornima day).
