Ok so if any of you noticed I didn’t get to review Uptown Yoga in Dallas on Monday. Unfortunatly I was unable to go because my hubby needed me to help out with some of his work stuff, so in order to take somethings off his plate I decided to postpone until this weekend. Last weekend I got some messages from readers that like me, are late to the yoga party and wanted to know what to expect for their first class. The main questions I received were what to bring to what to wear, so I am going to answer those in this post. Let me preface this by saying I am not even remotely close to being a yoga guru, in fact consider my tips coming from a beginner for a beginner. Chances are if you have been doing yoga recently, you know these basics, but I know what it’s like to be nervous about trying something new and I wanted to share what I learned from my experiences with my friends!
I’m a little shy trying new things with people I don’t know, so needless to say you wont find me in the front of the studio wearing teeny tiny yoga shorts (though I totally give props to girls who can!!). That being said, I wear modest rise yoga pants from Nike and a Nike tank with a built-in sports bra. I suggest mid-rise yoga pants because if you wear super low rise you’ll be tugging at your pants for the entire class and it creates a distraction. Also, the built in bra is important for support and coverage. On my feet I wear flip flops to class. Right now I am loving Sanuk’s yoga mat line. They are super cushy (if that’s a word…) and I found them with my mother in law after walking Disney Land for a day – sweet relief! As for what to bring, less is more I have found. I don’t even bring my purse. I bring an old Juicy Couture canvas bag (super old, I carried my books around in this in school) with a rolled up yoga mat and reuseable water bottle I got at TJMaxx/Homegoods. You will see others with various yoga mat bags, but I honestly just don’t see the point in spending the money as a newbie yogi. May be I’ll invest in a better mat & bag if I stick with it this time around… The last thing is a towel! Depending on the type of yoga your taking, the studio could be heated causing you to sweat more than usual. Having a towel available is crucial. What not to bring: a face covered in tons of make up (this bothers me even at the gym), your cell phone or an ipod. So I hope this encourages you to feel a bit more comfortable in trying a class for the first time! I promise you will have fun. Happy Thursday & Namaste.
